Part-time working

Less than standard, basic, full-time hours.

Flexi-time

Freedom to work in any way outside a set core of hours

Staggered hours

Different start, finish and break times, allowing longer core hours.

Compressed hours

Covering total number of hours in fewer working days.

Job sharing

One full-time job is split between two workers agreeing their own hours

Shift swapping

Shifts arrange amongst workers, provided all required shifts are covered.

Self rostering

Nominating preferred shifts, ensuring that cover is provided for at all times.

Time off in lieu (TOIL)

Time taken off to compensate for extra hours worked.

Term-time working

Permanent contract taking paid/unpaid leave during school holidays.

Annual hours

Proportion of contracted hours are kept in reserve so for periods where short notice working is required.

V-time working

Reduction of hours for a fixed period with a guarantee of full-time work when this period ends.

Zero-hours contracts

Working only the hours required by the employer.

Remote/Home working

All or part of the contracted hours working from home or somewhere else away from employer's premises.

Sabbatical/career break

Extended period of time off, either paid or unpaid.
